The situation began as a playground confrontation between children and ended with a man stabbed to death.
The incident happened over the weekend in the small Lapeer County town of Clifford.
The Lapeer County prosecutor said Shad Johnson died last Saturday after a fight with a 65-year-old man. Prosecutor Tim Turkelson said a disagreement started with two children playing at the park. Then the adults got involved.
"At some point the confrontation became physical at some point at the park and then it ended at the park," Turkelson said. "Sometime later, at least four individuals went to the older gentleman's house and continued the confrontation that started in the park."
That's when things turned deadly.
Turkelson said Johnson sustained a stab wound to the chest and was killed as a result. Turkelson said it could be two weeks before he decides whether or not to press charges in the case, meaning the man who stabbed Johnson is free.
"This is a gentleman who, without question, was on his own property when this incident occurred. He was responding to other individuals who were on his own property. By all accounts being aggressive with him. I don't think this gentleman is a threat to society at all at this point," Turkelson said.
Turkelson claims the authorities were not called until the incident was over. He said, in this case, cooler heads might have prevented this unfortunate loss of life.
