The first day of a river trip in Grand Canyon National Park ended tragically for a group from Germany.
Hans Uhl, 43, of Germany, was in Badger Rapids on the Colorado River when his kayak capsized about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski said.
Members of the group performed CPR and a boat with National Park Service medical personnel was able to reach Uhl who was initially responsive but lost consciousness and they were not able to resuscitate him.
Uhl was part of a commercial river trip that was on the first day of a multi-day trip.
The National Park Service and the Coconino Medical Examiner is investigating the incident.
