Facebook group created to save Bay City restaurant

A favorite restaurant for many residents in Bay County may be closing.

The Texan restaurant is being evaluated next week for rezoning. In its place could be a chain drugstore.

"I think we should try to save this restaurant that so many people seem to enjoy," said Devin Collier, Bay County resident.

The future of the Texan, located on the corner of Euclid and Midland Street in Bay County, is unclear. Officials plan to hold a meeting next week to talk about possibly rezoning the area, potentially clearing the way for a CVS pharmacy to move in instead.

"Its just a shame they want to tear it down," said Cheryl LaBonville, another Bay County resident.

When LaBonville heard the future of the Texan may be in question, she created the Save the Texan Facebook fan page.

"I was part of the John Glenn marching band and after football games we'd go there and just hang out. As a fellow band member and person who lived down the street, I was like, let's get the word out there they are trying to tear this down," LaBonville said.

The Facebook page has reached 140 members since it was created just a few days ago.

"Since I was like 3, I lived on Colombian Street, so probably one of my first memories was breakfast with my grandparents at the Texan because we could just walk there," Collier said.

If the Texan restaurant would close its doors, the drugstore chain CVS is a possible contender for the site.  However, right across the street is another drugstore chain, Rite Aid, and Walgreens is just down the street as well.

A representative from the Texan restaurant denied a comment, but local residents had plenty to say.

"I mean, not only has it been here for a really long time, it's one of the only 24-hour places you can go to and have breakfast, any kind of food at any kind of time," Collier said.

The public hearing is scheduled for June 17.
