CLIO, MI (WNEM) -

A truck driver had quite a scare while making a delivery Tuesday morning, when his truck went up in flames.

"So I had a feeling something wasn't right and I pulled over," said Charlie Beaker, driver.

Beaker was right, something was not right.

"I noticed there was a funny smell coming from my back brake, did a vehicle inspection and noticed my brakes were blown. I ran to the front of the truck to grab my fire extinguisher," Beaker said.

As he walked to the front of the truck he heard a loud explosion.

"Stuff was flying by my head and at that point I hit the ground, got up and noticed it was in flames. I took off running," Beaker said.

The truck was traveling southbound on I-75 early this morning when it caught fire near the Clio road exit in Genesee County. It was carrying orange juice.

The fire department said it was a mechanical fire that began in or around the wheels.

Clio's Assistant Fire Chief Kirk Todd said the dangerous part was where the truck was when the fire happened.

"Cars are going fast, no one stops," Todd said.

No one was hurt in the accident, but Beaker said he's glad the fire happened where, and when it did. Because just a few miles before he was at a gas station.

"Thank God it was down here, because there was a lot of people there and someone could have been really hurt. I'm glad it happened here," Beaker said.

The accident caused closures on I-75 for several hours while crews cleaned up the mess.
