Suspect steals golf flag, throws into woods

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A bizarre mystery is shaping up at a local golf course.

Apparently someone has been sneaking onto the Sawmill Golf Club in Saginaw Township, removing the flag on the sixth hole, and throwing it into the nearby woods.

It's happened several times in the past two weeks, leaving golfers and police stumped on a motive.

Some golfers hit the ball and wonder where the ball goes.

"I play out here on league on Thursday so I can have something to shoot at," Eric Spielhaupter said.

At the golf course some golfers now wonder where their flag went.

"I wouldn't understand what's the point of taking a flag. Where's he taking it?" Peter Alfano said.

Someone keeps taking the flag at the sixth hole over and over again. Spielhaupter said he's taking his teenage brother-in-law out on the course for the first time.

He said the stuff that's going on at the Saw Mill Golf Club is child's play.

"Sounds to me that's it's probably kids stuff. Kinda silly cause there's no cameras out there," Spielhaupter said.

Others seem upset over the lack of respect for the course, the game and the players.

"You come to a golf course, it's common etiquette just to place ball marks, and to just take care of the course," Alfano said.

Officials at the golf course said someone took the flag at hole six, six times in the last two weeks. Police are calling that behavior below par and are looking for the suspect Wednesday night.

"He was confronted by an employee and the suspect actually pushed the employee away, which raises it to assault and battery," Lt. John Pelkki said.

Meanwhile, golfers have their own message to send to the mystery man on hole six.

"If you're going to take the pin, put it in an easier spot for me on Thursday," Spielhaupter said.

A witness has described the culprit as a white male about 6 foot 3 inches with a thin build and blonde hair.

He was spotted driving a dark blue SUV.
