School remembers teen killed in Saginaw County crash

THOMAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Just two weeks after graduation, a Mid-Michigan teenager lost his life in a terrible car accident.

Now a community is remembering the Swan Valley graduate, who was just getting ready to embark on his future.

The accident has devastated an entire community.

"Unreal. It doesn't seem like it really happened," said Jack Martin, sophomore at Swan Valley High School.

Just weeks after walking across the stage with his cap and gown, police said 18-year-old Dokota Hill ran a red light about 7 p.m. Wednesday night, crashing into another vehicle at Gratiot and River roads in Saginaw County.

"Every year it seems like another kid dies in a car accident at Swan Valley. So it's kinda weird how that keeps happening," Martin said.

Hill's family said this is a tough time for the family.

"It impacts all of us as a family. A school and the community," said Craig Blower, principal at Swan Valley. "The community is behind (the family) 100 percent and we'll do whatever to help."

Police have not released the identities of the 22-year-old and 24-year-old occupants in the other vehicle.

The school district is planning a memorial service, but is waiting to talk with Hill's family to set a date and time.

Police said Hill was driving a truck westbound and collided with a car driven by a 22-year-old woman, who was turning from eastbound Gratiot to northbound N. River Road.

The woman also had a 24-year-old passenger in the vehicle. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Her passenger was uninjured.
