(FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS/CNN) – The state of Florida executed convicted murderer John Henry by lethal injection Wednesday, after the U.S. Supreme Court turned down a last-minute appeal.

Henry was sentenced to death for stabbing his wife and her young son to death in 1985.

He also previously served time for murdering his girlfriend in 1976.

Henry was the third man executed nationwide since the botched lethal injection of an Oklahoma man in April.
