An ex-convict has received a one-year jail sentence on a firearms charge after his son accidentally shot an 11-year-old friend to death during a sleepover at their home in Michigan's rural Thumb.

Sanilac County Circuit Judge Donald Teeple issued the sentence Wednesday for the man, who pleaded guilty May 5 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Eleven-year-old Tyler Dunn died Nov. 23 from a rifle shot in the Marlette Township home of the father and son. Authorities say no adult was home.

The 12-year-old boy pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm and was sentenced May 6 to probation until age 19.

The Associated Press isn't identifying either of them to avoid naming the son.
