Flint Farmer's Market prepping for opening day

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Saturday will mark a change for residents who shop the Flint Farmer's Market.

After decades on East Boulevard along the Flint River, the farmer's market is returning to its roots in the heart of downtown, and it is bigger than ever.

"It is definitely something that us long-time residents, it has us just bubbling," said William Caldwell.

Caldwell couldn't resist the play on words as he described his new luxury soap store that opens this weekend in the new farmer's market.  He said the size, space and price of the new location create a perfect opportunity to launch Savon Handcrafted Luxury Soaps, his brand new business.

"It was something that we decided to say, hey, let's try to do something bigger, and there's a venue here, so a light bulb went off," said Caldwell.

Caldwell is just one of more than 50 business owners moving into the 32,000-square-foot facility.

"The whole downtown area is going to absolutely love it," said Shane Dean.

On Thursday night, it looked more like a mad house, as people like Dean, owner of J. Dean's Smokehouse, scrambled preparing for the doors to open on Saturday morning.

"Last-minute touches, well, the last two days will probably be last minute for me, but we're stocking fridges, getting our signage up, that sort of thing, you can see I got everything built up here, and ready to open," said Dean.

The new multi-million dollar downtown facility replaces the old farmer's market that snuggled next to the Flint River.  Some believe its new spot will be another building block for the revitalization of the city.

"I think this is what the city needs to see, it gives people some hope, gives entrepreneurs a place where they can establish themselves, and I think it's been a long time coming," said Caldwell.

Doors open at 8 a.m. on Saturday. For more information about the new farmer's market, CLICK HERE.
