Former Saginaw Mayor Del Schrems has passed away at the age of 73.
Schrems served as mayor of the city from 1987-89. Prior to that, Schrems served on Saginaw's City Council for 15 years.
Longtime former Mayor Gary Loster was a councilman when Schrems was mayor.
"He loved this city, he participated in a number of activities and he pushed a number of activities for the city of Saginaw," Loster said.
Schrems was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Helen and St. John Vianney Catholic churches and served on their parish councils.
Schrems had been battling cancer for the past few months.
"I was surprised to hear of it this morning, not knowing Mr. Schrems had been ill. However, with all due respect to him, he did serve the city well," Saginaw Councilman Larry Coulouris said.
His funeral liturgy will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland. There will be visitation for Schrems at Snow Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
