Man arraigned in county road commission embezzlement case

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

An embezzlement investigation at a county road commission led to the arrest of a recently retired road commission employee.

Randall Emeott was arraigned Thursday and charged with one count of embezzlement. He was released on a $5,000 bond.

"A few weeks ago our finance department found some questionable invoices," said Todd Hare, Saginaw County Road Commission chairman.

Hare said the employee is the focus of that investigation. Apparently some purchases were made that weren't for a commission vehicle, Hare said.

"We believe it was for a personal vehicle charged to the road commission, and at that point Mr. Borchard here contacted the state police," Hare said.

Hare said there were a couple of incidents amounting to less than a couple thousand dollars. He added there could be other instances they don't know about right now. Hare wouldn't say how much money was involved.

"It was components, so it was not a vehicle. It was a fairly small amount of money, value-wise, but still it was for personal use," Hare said. "It's a fairly low amount of money. Now, are there more? That's to be determined."

Meanwhile, the commission chair said the first incident allegedly happened a year ago, another a few months ago.

"You hire people and trust them with taxpayer dollars and this board is very disappointed that we had an employee that actually attempted to do this," Hare said.

Emeott's pretrial date has not been set yet.
