Woman dies after being run over several times in Douglasville

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Bond was not granted Friday afternoon to the man accused of repeatedly running over and killing a Douglas County grandmother.

Around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, an accident occurred on Highway 5 near Interstate 20 between Walgreen's and Waffle House.

According to witnesses, Dewey Calhoun Green, 23, of Pelham, AL, rear-ended the vehicle of Janice Pitts, 53, of Douglasville, three times as she waited for the light to turn into the Lowe's parking lot.

Witnesses said when Pitts got out of the vehicle to check for damage, Green hit her with his car.

Police told CBS46 Green hit Pitts by pulling around the left side of the car and pinning her against the car. He then backed up and pulled forward over her several times.

Witnesses surrounded Green's car and took the keys out of the ignition and held him until police arrived.

An off-duty nurse rendered aid until paramedics arrived.

Pitts, who was in cardiac arrest, was taken to Wellstar General Hospital where she died.

Pitts' adult daughter and grandchild were in the vehicle when the incident occurred.

Green is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and murder and is being held in the Douglas County Jail.

Investigators did not immediately know a motive and said the two did not know each other. They were waiting on toxicology results to determine if Green was under the influence.

According to Alabama records, Green was convicted of reckless driving in 2011, clocked at going nearly 100 miles an hour. In 2010, he plead guilty to speeding.

Green's mom and sister, who attended Friday's hearing, said they were sorry for what had happened.

Pitts' family did not want to comment further.
