OGEMAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Several people were hurt after being struck by lightning in Ogemaw County Saturday night.

At least six people were taken to the hospital, including a 3-year-old girl. Fortunately, everyone is expected to be okay.

The incident happened at the Rifle River Recreation Area.

The situation was a close call for Jim Negipe and his family. They were camping at the park when lightning suddenly struck a tree just inches away from their camper.

Jim's wife, Violet, is one of the family members that felt the shock.

According to the National Weather Service, in an average year, more people in the U.S. are killed by lightning strikes than tornadoes and hurricanes combined.
