Inmate, deputy contract meningitis at Bay County Jail

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A cell block at the Bay County Jail was on lockdown on Monday.

The lockdown occurred after two inmates and one deputy were sent to the hospital with meningitis symptoms.

One inmate and one deputy contracted viral meningitis, the Bay County Sheriff's Office said. The other inmate had another type of virus.

The deputy is being released from the hospital Tuesday morning and the inmate should be released Tuesday afternoon.

A nurse was tending to inmates in the cell block that was on lockdown and encouraged them not to share anything.

One of the inmates is on work release, so the person could have contracted the illness outside of the jail.

All jail operations were back to normal on Tuesday.
