The baby of a teen mom is found buried in Franklin Co.
LOUISBURG, N.C. -
The newborn baby of a 16-year-old mother was found buried in a side yard near her home in the Fox Ridge Farms subdivision, Franklin County Sheriff Jerry Jones said Monday.
Following up on a tip, Jones said deputies first came to the home Sunday evening asking to speak to the teen, but were told she was not home. They returned when the girl's father called and said they needed to come back.
Jones said authorities found the 8½-pound baby girl Sunday at 10 p.m.
On Monday, Jones told WNCN the teen had confessed. On Tuesday, Jones clarified his comments and said there was "speculation" that the teen girl had buried the baby in the side yard, but she did not confess to authorities.
Deputies found the newborn's body in a brown grocery bag buried in a shallow grave beside the home.
The father of the child is a teen as well, Jones said.
Jones said authorities believe the baby was born Sunday around lunchtime but are still investigating. Jones said the state medical examiner's office determined the baby had been born healthy.
