New gun law gives gun owners more freedom to carry in public buildings

DORAVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Depending on who you talk to, Georgia's new gun law is the worst or best thing to happen to state residents.

"It is a good thing because basically it shows Georgia citizens that the Georgia Legislature really cares about our Second Amendment rights and they support our constitutional right to bear arms," said Sam Hayes of Caliber Training Group.

"I have some real concerns with the new law. I really don't know what was wrong with the old law," said Gregg Nurred of Nurred and Associates.

The new law allows gun owners, who have a permit to carry their weapon in public, to take their firearms inside a variety of places, including bars and public government buildings. That concerns Nurred.

"I think you will probably see more incidents of workplace violence moving to government buildings," Nurred said.

Nurred's company provides security at most public buildings in the City of Atlanta and Fulton County, and most of his employees are unarmed.

"You are going to have an unarmed guard trying to deal with an incident with a guy that is armed and in a government building. Why does anyone need to carry a gun to the library or anything like that?" said Nurred.

"We are not criminals. The mere presence of a gun does not mean we are going to automatically start committing crimes," said Hayes.

Hayes is a security and firearms expert with more than 20 years of experience. He said Nurred's concerns are unfounded.

"If anything I think we may see a reduction is crime because as a criminal you are probably less likely to commit a crime in an area where you know there is a high probability of people being armed," Hayes said.
