FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -
A Mid-Michigan Fourth of July tradition is getting ready to kick off once again on Friday in Frankenmuth.
Residents can register now for the Volkslaufe race.
Even though it was raining Thursday morning in Frankenmuth, two runners were out going through their paces before the big Volkslaufe event.
This is the 39th annual running of the Volkslaufe. On Thursday, organizer Jamie Furnbush was getting ready for the race, which she said will be bigger and better than ever with more than 2,700 runners expected to compete.
"It's just wonderful to see a lot of those families who have returned here year after year, we're looking forward to it," Furnbush said.
There should be cool weather for the runners to race in.
"The cooler temperatures to those runners we're hoping that maybe a new race-course record would be great. We always look for that on cool days so it should be a great day to run," Furnbush said.
The Frankenmuth Jaycees put on the race, which they said the community is quite proud of.
"Well, we have people that come literally from all over the country. We've even had international runners. We have a lot of Canadians who make the trip to Frankenmuth as well," said Lucas Hart, with the Frankenmuth Jaycees.
The gates open for runners and everyone else Friday morning at 6.
The races are all held on certified courses, beginning and ending in Heritage Park.
