Canine man teaches defense against wild dogs

Posted: Updated:

One local man said he's found a way to prevent dog bites and uses his techniques to protect postal and utility workers.

"They're looking for weak, fearful, they're looking for the ones who get paralyzed when they hear them bark," Hector Hernandez said.

Residents call him the canine man. Hernandez has been teaching police, utility workers, postal workers and regular people how to prevent dog attacks or to handle it if it occurs.

"A big myth is never look at a dog. Anybody who tells you that has never been attacked by a dog," Hernandez said. "That's why I like to make videos of me getting attacked by dogs with no equipment on to teach people that."

Hernandez said there's a couple of simple things residents can do to make sure they're safe from dog attacks when they're out walking.

The first thing is to take earphones out. That way residents won't have any distractions. He said most people already have a weapon in their hand and don't even realize it, their walking stick. Residents can use it to swing back and forth to keep the animals off of them. He said if they're lucky enough to injure one of the animals their chances of survival are greater.

"In most cases if you injure one dog you're going to present to the pack that you're not weak, you're not old, you're not injured and you're not young. It's going to present that you're strong and then they're going to look for easier prey," Hernandez said.

He said the key to survival if confronted by a wild dog is to summon the strength to look confident.
