Loons Rally in Big Way to Beat Lugnuts, 12-4

LANSING, MI – Trailing 4-2 entering the top of the eighth inning, things looked bleak for the Great Lakes Loons Sunday afternoon. A 10-run outburst over the final two innings, however, gave the Loons a 12-4 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts and secured a three-game series win.
Brady Dragmire entered in the eighth inning for Lansing to protect a two-run lead. But the Loons used a walk, hit batsman and an error by Dragmire on a bunt to load the bases. Paul Hoenecke drove in one run with a single to right. Then Josmar Cordero followed with the big blow, a three-run double to left keying a six-run eighth.
The Loons tacked on four more in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Jacob Scavuzzo.
The win improves the Loons' second half record to 8-9. It's the first time in the half they've scored more than five runs.
The Loons scored the first two runs of the contest. In the first, Jesmuel Valetin led it off with a triple. He then scored on a single by Joey Curletta. In the sixth inning, again Valentin led off with a hit (a single), then scored on a single by Curletta to put the Loons up 2-0.
Loons starter Jonathan Martinez cruised through five scoreless frames, but hit a figurative wall in the sixth. After getting a quick out on a strikeout, Martinez allowed the Lugnuts to hit for the cycle over four batters – a homer by Matt Dean, a single by Mitch Nay, a Derrick Loveless double and a triple by Dawel Lugo – giving the Nuts the lead, 4-2.
Ralston Cash (2-1) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Valentin, Curletta, Cordero and Hoenecke all recorded two hits each for the Loons. Nay finished the game 3-for-3 for Lansing.
The Loons do not play Monday but return to action at Dow Diamond Tuesday night at 7:05p. Right-hander Brandon Martinez (1-4) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Fort Wayne righty Ronald Herrera (5-5, 3.27). It's Local Heroes Night and a Dodgers Route of Champions Night. Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL.
The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
