MOST WANTED: Credit and debit card "skimmers" stealing ID's in the Tri-Cities

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) - Just because your credit card is still in your wallet doesn't mean it hasn't been technically "stolen."

That's the warning from Johnson City Police after a string of crimes involving credit and debit cards.

"We've recently made some arrests in some credit card cases of this type where the card is actually being fraudulently made from information that's obtained from various places," said Lt. Steve Sherfey, Johnson City Police.

Sherfey says the crooks have several methods for stealing enough information from your card while you're using it to replicate it and charge to your account.

One method is called "skimming."

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Scammers use cameras, keypad overlays, and skimming devices - like a realistic-looking card reader placed over the factory-installed card reader on an ATM or gas pump - to capture the information from your card's magnetic strip without your knowledge and get your PIN."
Johnson City Police want anyone who recognizes the suspect in the surveillance video to call them at 423-434-6158.
