Teen drowns in quarry near Rappahannock River

Posted: Updated:

An 18-year-old has died after police say he drowned while with a group of friends in a disused quarry near the Rappahannock River.

Police, Fire crews and the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad were called to the quarry at the end of Wicklow Drive around 7:40 p.m. on Monday. Police say the victim, Anthony Mandel Johnson, Jr., and a friend were swimming toward a rope swing when he began struggling in the water. Several people tried to rescue Johnson, but they were unable to reach him.

Johnson was recovered from the water 45 minutes later. He was pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital. The Medical Examiner has ruled the cause of death as accidental drowning.

Police say the quarry is private property, but is known to be a popular site for swimming. They are increasing patrols in the area for the rest of the summer.
