PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A pair of former police officers turned security guards for a Valley shipping service are suspected of stealing marijuana-laced chocolate bars from their company with designs on reselling them for a profit.

Phoenix police arrested David Bryant, 44, and Eric Whittington, 45, after OnTrac Shipping told police the pair had stolen several pounds of the edible-marijuana bars, according to a justice court document.

Both are former officers with the Goodyear Police Department.

Police served a search warrant at Bryant's home in Goodyear and Whittington's home in Litchfield Park. Investigators said they found more than 20 pounds of the chocolate bars and several firearms at Whittington's house, according to the document. Police estimated the marijuana-infused bars were worth $2,500.

The suspects claimed they had taken the bars to dispose of them at their employer's request.

But police said they found text messages between the two suspects discussing the sale of the marijuana-infused bars.

Whittington was arrested at his home late Thursday night and Bryant at his home early Friday morning. Both were booked into jail on one count each of possession of narcotics for sale and theft.

No other information was immediately available.
