Former Saginaw mayor runs for county commissioner

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A familiar face in local politics is throwing her hat into the ring once again.

Former Saginaw Mayor Wilmer Ham-McZee is running for county commissioner despite her controversial past.

She is attempting to make a political comeback, running for county commissioner for the tenth district.

Anna MacMillan has one of those campaign signs displayed on her front lawn.

"I just believe in her and think she can do good things," MacMillan said.

Ham-McZee served as mayor from 2001 to 2005. When she left office, she was involved in a legal scandal when she was convicted of insurance fraud in 2007. That resulted from the torching of a car that she owned. Her conviction was later expunged.

"Everybody makes mistakes and I don't think it would be a problem for her," Gary Loster said.

He served on the city council at the same time as Ham-McZee. He said her work in the community speaks for itself.

"She's done a lot for the city of Saginaw. She's been involved in the community for years and she just wants to continue to contribute. So she's come out of retirement," he said.

Judging by the number of signs found in a Saginaw neighborhood, support for the former mayor is strong.
