PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) -

An unemployed software programmer who fled to his native India after killing his wife and two children in 2008 has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Nanci Grant, responding to Lakshminivasa Nerusu's stance that he was insane at the time of the murders, told him Thursday that he must be "wholly, completely and vilely selfish" and "that doesn't make you mentally ill, that makes you an evil human being."

Nerusu was found guilty last month of first-degree murder in the slayings of 37-year-old Jayalakshmi Nerusu, 14-year-old daughter Tejasvi and 12-year-old son Siva.

Jayalakshmi Nerusu was stabbed 59 times in 2008 in the couple's Novi home. The throats of their children were slashed.

He was arrested in India and extradited in 2013.
