It was a tragedy that claimed the lives of two women. The vehicle they were riding in slammed into a garage and burst into flames.
A close friend of one of the victims is opening up about finding her still alive in the middle of the flames.
The woman, who doesn't want to be identified, talks about the death of Sherry West. The Lapeer County woman and another woman died in a car fire last week.
She recounts as she tried to help her friend after answering a frantic knock on the door from West's husband Greg.
West's husband Greg was screaming frantically, "She's on fire in the driveway. You have to help her!"
The woman says when she got to the scene at the Lapeer Township home, it was horrifying.
"I leaned down and I said, oh my god, Sherry! I was pulling her clothes off because they were burning," says the woman.
Authorities say Sherry West was rushed to the hospital where she died a short time later. Meanwhile, the unidentified witness says another gruesome discovery was made. The body of Linda Horton was found a short time later, also in the car.
One person who knew the victims says this isn't the first time there's been trouble at this house.
"I've picked up Sherry and taken her to the hospital a couple times regarding a domestic that's between them both," says area resident Dawn Rise.
Police do confirm they arrested Greg West back in January for domestic violence. West is currently lodged in the Lapeer County Jail, charged with obstructing an officer in this current incident.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the unidentified woman says she's trying to cope with an overwhelming sense of grief.
At this point. it's not known if Greg West will face criminal charges in connection with the women's deaths.
