Teens give back to a local community

Posted: Updated:

This week many teens are traveling a long way just to give back.

Alexis Tremelling lives in Wisconsin, but this week she's building a porch for a family in Midland County.

"It's important because they have a lot of medical bills because of their son. They just really need the help they can get. It just feels really good to help them out with the porch and the siding," Tremelling said.

High school teens from all across the county are strapping on tool belts to help fix homes in Midland County. It's part of a summer camp program sponsored by Bullock Creek Schools and Messiah Lutheran Church.

"It feels amazing that you're doing something huge for a community. Sure, it's not even ours, but it's helping out somebody in need," Tremelling said.

While they are here, teens are camping out in sleeping bags at Bullock Creek High School.

They break off into smaller groups to renovate and repair 75 homes in the area.

For many homes in Midland County, work that needs to be done wouldn't happen without these kids. They estimate the project equals about $65,000 in labor throughout the week.

"It really is a phenomenal impact. For one, it's the physical work, the things we all need fixed around the house, but it's the emotional side too. For most these folks, they haven't had a chance to paint in years, or to repair something or even afford it. But for a lot of them are older adults. To have younger teens and life around the house, by the end of the week, they don't want them to leave," Camp director Don Steward said.

Even though it's work the kids said they have a blast doing it.

"It's fun. It's a good experience to have. It shapes you as a person and makes you closer to God," Kate Mora said.

The volunteers are also collecting food to donate to the local food pantry.
