WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Two men were arrested after they were found in possession of a Ford Mustang Saleen that they drove off the lot for a test drive and never returned.

A University of New Haven student, who had recently graduated, was selling his vehicle to 23-year-olds Travis Breda and Stephen Verity. He told police that Breda and Verity were taking the 2005 Ford Mustang Saleen for a test drive with the student following behind them.

According to police, Breda, of Derby, and Verity, of Milford, drove away from the graduate student and eluded the owner.

"The mustang went really fast," said Breda, adding that he let Verity do the test drive and when he came back they both took off down Campbell Avenue. The victim said he tried to keep up with them but eventually lost them.

After calling both Breda and Verity, the UNH student went to the police department where he filed a complaint.

Breda and Verity called police and said they were being harassed by the student. The two men told police that they had purchased the Ford Mustang Saleen for $9,500, however the vehicle is valued at between $21,000 and $26,000.

When Breda showed police the bill of sale and title, detectives "noticed the complainant's name was misspelled and signatures didn't match."

After talking with police, Breda eventually admitted both he and Verity "attempted to steal the vehicle and one of the signatures were forged."

Police called Verity and he brought the Ford Mustang Saleen to the police department where investigators said he "attempted to walk away from the vehicle after parking it."

Breda and Verity, who is a self-employed mechanic, were charged with second-degree larceny and second-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. Police also charged Verity with second-degree forgery and interfering with police.

Verity posted bond and Breda was given an ankle monitor and is under house arrest.
