Man dead after being shot by officer during traffic stop

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A traffic stop has resulted in a Flint Township police officer shooting and killing a male driver.

The incident occurred near Flushing Road and Eldorado Drive in Flint Township shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Police say the officer was getting people out of the car when one of them jumped behind the wheel and then drove towards the officer.

That's when the officer shot off two rounds, hitting the man.

A man who was at a nearby business saw the entire incident unfold.

"He was just starting to take off and then shot him twice," says the witness. "He got shot twice, did a u-turn and then crashed."

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.

Robert McCathern, pastor of Joy Tabernacle, says something needs to be done.

"The people who are supposed to stand for public safety are becoming a concern to us about our safety," says McCathern.

This is the third traffic stop in recent weeks that's ended with someone losing their life.

Flint city councilman Sheldon Neeley represents this district. He spent a couple of hours at the scene talking to residents, urging them not to jump to conclusions.

"We're anxiously waiting to figure out what happened to see of this was justified or not," says Neeley.

The name of the victim has not been released.
