Henrico Police: Thief strikes with child at Short Pump Town Center

Posted: Updated:

A Short Pump mother is facing multiple charges. Henrico Police say 42-year-old Yolande Kathryn Dunn stole several clothing items from a department store in Short Pump Town Center, but that's not all. She allegedly had a young child with her.

We spoke to the family nanny. She was shocked to hear the allegations.

"How is she with the kids?" we asked.

"She is a really good mother," said Vicenta Chavez. "It might just be a misunderstanding because as long as I've known them I have nothing bad to say about them."

Officers responded to a department store at Short Pump Town Center on July 16, 2014 around 6:15 PM.  Loss prevention told police Dunn stole several clothing items form the store.

An 11-year-old female family member was allegedly with Dunn.  Police say pills and marijuana were found on Dunn when she was taken into custody.

"Well Short Pump is not immune from what goes on in the inner city," said Charles Willis with Citizens Against Crime.

Willis says it's not enough to just put people in jail.

"You are just sitting waiting to be released and not being educated on what you got you there," said Willis.

We are told that young child is now staying with family.
