VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A day after attempting suicide at the Clark County Jail, a man being held in connection with the shooting of a Vancouver police officer has been pronounced dead at a hospital.

James Sapp was accused of shooting motorcycle officer Dustin Goudschaal seven times during a traffic stop in June.

As Goudschaal approached a pickup truck believed to be stolen, Sapp leaned out the driver's side window and opened fire, police said. A witness then came to Goudschaal's aid and applied a bandage to his neck.

After a frantic manhunt during which Sapp was accused of multiple carjacking attempts, he was taken into custody and then booked into jail on charges of attempted murder.

On Thursday, deputies making a routine cell check discovered Sapp in the act of an attempted suicide inside his cell around 1:30 p.m. They intervened, and on-duty jail medical staff responded to provide medical care, the sheriff's office said.

They were relieved by Vancouver firefighters and AMR paramedics, who then took him to a nearby hospital via ambulance.

The sheriff's office said Sapp was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m. Friday, and his body was transferred to the Clark County Medical Examiner for an official cause and manner of death.

The Clark County Regional Major Crimes Team is investigating the suicide.

Detectives said Sapp was a white supremacist with a criminal history that included multiple felony convictions.
