Tourism on the rise in Michigan

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

"I love the area," Margo Owens said.

Owens is like a lot of people hitting the road this weekend. She's heading north to relax. Something she does often in her home state.

"It's beautiful. There's so much to do and it's gorgeous, and I'm proud of being from Michigan," she said.

Other motorists agree. They said they're seeing a lot more traffic on the roadways this year. Telling us the great lakes state has plenty to offer tourists.

According to Travel Michigan tourism is on the rise, with most areas of the state reporting an increase in the number of visitors and more hotel bookings made by travelers from across the country and around the world.

MDOT reports between two and three percent more cars were on the highways during the Fourth of July weekend. Numbers were down slightly in the U.P. State officials blame concerns over cool weather. Meanwhile, clicks at the state's travel website is up more than 20 percent this year.

The Pure Michigan campaign is credited for that increase.

Owens hopes to see even more people taking a Pure Michigan vacation.

"Come. Yeah absolutely, there's wonderful things to see and do," she said.
