Big boat comes to Midland for Rivers Day Festival

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -
A big festival going on in Mid-Michigan Friday and Saturday is drawing a big boat.

The Midland Area Community Foundation's River Days Festival is going on at Chippewassee Park.

Residents who head down to the Tridge Friday or Saturday, chances are they'll see the boat plying the waters under the bridge.

Chris Chamberlain is the captain of the Grand Princess. It's basically a party boat that can accommodate about 150 people.

"A lot of people don't realize quite how big the boat is. Then they get up there and they go up to the second floor and it's a whole different view, you get 15 feet off the water and you get a different view from a pontoon boat or something," Chamberlain said.

Chamberlain takes the Grand Princess all over the state. He had an interesting experience when he took the boat to Midland this year.

"The rivers go up and down quite a bit and I know we had quite a bit of rain up here the past week. When we were running here on Wednesday we just barely fit under the Tridge here by a couple of inches so it's always a challenge everywhere we go," he said.

Everywhere the Grand Princess goes it attracts stares. Billy Johnson was relaxing on a bench taking in the big boat Friday morning. He said he's glad it's a part of the River Days Festival.

"It's actually a good thing to see, I remember when I was a kid they never had anything like this," Johnson said.

The weather forecast for the Grand Princess' trip to Midland is great, which makes for a smooth ride.

"It's always nice knowing we have good weather. We get a much better turnout for the festival and for the boat," Chamberlain said.

Residents can ride the Grand Princess at the festival. It costs $5 for adults and $3 for children.
