13 headstones, including historic 'Slave' stone, vandalized in Gaston Co. cemetery

Posted: Updated:

Thirteen headstones, including a historic one marking the last slave born in Gaston County, were damaged on Friday night, police say.

According to Gaston County Police, someone damaged the headstones on Friday night.

"It makes me think there's some sick people in the world that would do such a thing," said Church trustee James Wright.

The cemetery is along the 2900-block of Dallas Stanley Highway, just outside of Stanley. It belongs to Springfield Baptist Church and the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

"Among the damaged headstones is an historic one marking the grave of a man who was reportedly the last slave born in Gaston County," police said.

Church members save said they will pray for the vandals but hope they are caught,

"They need to pay the price so they won't do it no more," Wright said.

Anyone with information should contact the Gaston County Police Department at 704-866-3320 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 861-8000.
