LOUISBURG, N.C. -

The mother of a child who was found buried beside a home in Franklin County has been charged with concealing and failing to report a death, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Ashley Reed, 16, of Louisburg is scheduled to appear in Franklin County District Court on July 29.

District Attorney Sam Currin said Tuesday that the umbilical cord on the baby was cut too close and that caused the baby to bleed to death. Currin said the medical examiner is still doing testing and he has not received the full autopsy.

The newborn baby was found buried in a side yard near her home in the Fox Ridge Farms subdivision.

Following up on a tip, deputies first came to the home on June 29 asking to speak to the teen, but were told she was not home. They returned when the girl's father called and said they needed to come back.

Jones said authorities found the 8.5-pound baby girl in a brown grocery bag buried in a shallow grave beside the home.

The father of the child is a teen as well.
