Popular online scam dupes customers into revealing personal data

Posted: Updated:
FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

Criminals steal billions of dollars every year through sophisticated online scams. A popular one now dupes banking customers into revealing their personal information.

Lawyer Steve Weisman uncovers online scams and he has a warning about the emails that appear to be from a person's bank. He says they might be fake.

"My motto is ‘trust me, you can't trust anyone,'" he said.

Weisman points to an email he received claiming to be a security alert from Bank of America. At first glance the email looks legitimate, but Weisman said it came from a con artist.

The same thing was the case when a CBS News employee received a Chase Bank security alert. The email claimed she needed to reactivate her account. It even provided a link that appeared to go to chase.com, but the link actually went to a fake website set up by scammers to look like the real thing. The fake site asked for personal information, including a social security number. The customer suspected something was wrong and immediately contacted Chase who protected her accounts.

"They want personal information. Sometimes it's to access directly your bank account or your brokerage account," Weisman said.

Both the Chase and Bank of America websites warn customers about these types of scams and how to avoid becoming a victim.

"If you get an email with a link, you never click on the link, no matter how legitimate it looks, until you have actually contacted that company," Weisman said.

The banks say that when someone contacts them to use the phone number on the back of their credit or ATM card. Don't use a number sent in a suspicious text or email.

Weisman founded the website scamicide.com where he addresses scams, fraud and identity theft.
