Apartment complex allegedly throws tenants' belongings in dumpster

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Imagine coming home to your apartment five days before your lease is up, and finding all your stuff in the dumpster.

That's what happened to a group of local college students and now they say the company that owns the complex is dragging its feet in paying them back.

The girls claim the company is offering to pay them less than half of what their stuff was worth.

"Hurt a lot to see my bed in three different dumpsters," Sarah Snear, 20, said.

She was so shocked at what she found, she pulled out her camera and took a video.

According to Snear, she and three roommates rented an apartment at the Township Square Apartments just off Center Road in Saginaw Township. Their contract states July 20 should've been their last day, but the former tenant said their stuff was put out to the curb by apartment employees five days before they were scheduled to move out.

Morgan Paehlig lived with Snear. She's outraged at what happened.

"They think we're college kids and don't know what we have," Paehlig said.

TV5 went to the Township Square Apartments to ask them the tough questions.

"I'm going to ask you to leave. I'll refer everything to our corporate offices," the apartment manager said.

Snear said Township Square offered to pay for her bed and bed frame, but that's it.

"They need to pay for all of the belongings, microwave, clothes, hangers, food," Snear said.

A legal expert said if the allegations are true, Township Square Apartments could be on the hook for more than they bargained for.

"Damages can be up to three times the amount of what the tenant can prove they owned," the legal expert said.

Taking matters to court is something the women said they are ready to do.

"I don't want to take it to court, but we will if we have to," Snear said.
