New car service comes to Flint - WNEM TV 5

New car service comes to Flint

Posted: Updated:

A ride-sharing service that makes it quicker, easier and cheaper to get a lift is coming to a Mid-Michigan city.

Soon residents of Flint will be able to request a ride at the touch of a button and get picked up within minutes.

"It's not really a cab per se, but let somebody else do the driving," Kimberly Mears said.

The service is called Uber.

"It's a technology service that pairs riders with a driver through their app," Mears said.

Mears is one of the local Uber drivers. She thinks this could be a way to help her.

"I'm a single mom. So I drive all day every day anyway, so I figured why not make some money doing it," she said.

A resident downloads the Uber app to their phone, input their personal information as well as their credit card info. When they need a ride, they access the app and the nearest Uber driver sees their location. Shortly after, their ride is there and because your credit card is on file there's no need for cash.

"No money is exchanged. It's totally safe. What they do is they track the drive through the Uber phone. Know that when you get in my car this ride will be, you know, tracked so if anything goes wrong then they will know right off the bat. If I don't hit end fare and knowing that this trip has ended, eventually some signals and some bells will go off," Mears said.

Mears said this new service will not only be convenient, but if you're out anywhere doing anything a ride home is only a click away on your smartphone, and she said drivers use their own cars.

Another bonus Uber said is their rides are cheaper than a cab.
