Local man dies after working out

Posted: Updated:

A local family is devastated after their son's attempt at staying fit may have cost him his life.

Greg Wirgau died last week shortly after completing a workout known as  'Crossfit.'

His parents say Wirgau was a family man, loved his wife and four children and adored the Chesaning community.

Last Monday, he died suddenly at the age of 51.

According to his parents, Greg suffered an apparent heart attack shortly after a workout at a local Chesaning fitness center. But the family is still waiting for his autopsy results.

"Something happened. Whether it's his age and that he is not a teenager anymore. Or whether it was a combination or if he just did too much," says his mother, Linda Wirgau.

Family members say Wirgau loved exercising.

His parents tell TV5 he had just left crossfit training and was apparently jogging home when he collapsed.

Crossfit is a high-intensity fitness program that focuses on metabolic conditions, gymnastics, and weight lifting to improve core strength and conditioning.

Some people say it is the best and most challenging fitness program they've found while others claim it pushes users into potential danger zones.

Now it's imperative to note there's no definitive connection between Wirgau's death and Crossfit but his father says with a family history of heart problems, it may have.

"Maybe he went at it too strong like he used to do everything, so who knows," says his father David Wirgau.

Fitness experts say beware before engaging in something as strenuous as Crossfit.

"If I rated Crossfit, it's towards the top of exercise. It's very intense, it's very hard, you're using all freeweights. Definitely something you need to be guided through," says Jimmy Daniels, a personal trainer.

In the end, the family waits for the definitive cause of death.

Crossfit classes are about an hour long and suitable for all ages. Even scaling workouts to fit all participants.

They say Greg's death was tragic and they are now focusing on supporting his family and friends with continued prayers.
