LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A couple forced a freeway service worker at gunpoint to drive them to a neighborhood where they committed two home invasions that resulted in a victim's death, Las Vegas Metro police said.
A man suspected in the crime spree was later shot and killed by officers after he held a victim at gunpoint.
According to Capt. Matt McCarthy of Metro, a freeway service worker's carjacking at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday began the chain of events.
The worker tried to offer roadside assistance on U.S. 95 near Tropicana Avenue to a man and a woman who appeared to have had trouble getting into a white Nissan Altima.
Police said the man instead pulled a gun on the service worker and forced the person to drive them to a neighborhood on Autumn Street, near the area of Tropicana and Sandhill Road.
It was there, police said, the home invasions took place.
In the first break-in, one of the suspects shot a male homeowner, killing him, while stabbing a woman inside.
Police said the stabbing victim was being treated at a local hospital in critical condition.
The pair moved on to a nearby residence on Almondwood Drive, where one of the suspects shot a woman inside.
By that time, officers had arrived and confronted the male suspect who came out of the home and held a gun to his accomplice, according to police. They said the female suspect posed as a hostage.
Police said the moment resulted in the woman trying to flee the scene. The woman, though, was caught by officers.
The male suspect then went back inside the home, brought the gunshot victim out as a hostage and held her in front of police. The suspect then threw the woman to the ground, allowing police to open fire on the man.
The male suspect died from the shooting.
Metro said the female gunshot victim was also taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Police did not immediately disclose a motive for the incident. Police also did not say whether any of the homes were robbed of any items.
Roads around Almondwood and Autumn were closed amid an investigation.
