Volunteer first responders get kicked out of building

OSCODA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A group of first responders is being kicked out of the building they've used for the last 15 years.

Now some people in the community are saying the move was more about the politics than the people.

"I don't think it's good to boot out somebody who is a volunteer, can't be anything other than politics," Jesse Johnson said.

It's the talk of the Iosco County community of Oscoda Township.

A person close to the matter said it all started when the president of the Oscoda Area First Responders EMS, Ryan Ridgeway, settled a wrongful termination lawsuit against the Iosco County 911 Board about three months ago.

Another source who didn't want to be named said Elite Shellenbarger was part of the board that fired Ridgeway. Residents said Shellenbarger's position on the board and Ridgeway's lawsuit against it was the reason the volunteer EMS organization received the eviction notice.

Shellenbarger said the decision wasn't politically motivated. He said the county simply needed more storage space, but residents aren't buying it.
