Road construction negatively impacting businesses

Posted: Updated:

A construction project is irking some local business owners.

The ongoing road work is taking a big bite out of their business, and they said they're tired of losing money.

"We're struggling here," Guadalupe Rosas, manager at Extreme Tire Mechanics, said.

The Saginaw business is losing money. Rosas blames that on road construction right outside his front door.

Crews have been working on this part of Genesee Avenue since mid-June.

"I literally lost 80 percent of my business the last month and a half," Rosas said.

He said he doesn't know how he's going to pay his bills. Especially since customers are few and far between.

"Looking down the road it's a complete ghost town this time of day. Usually we're packed," Rosas said.

The timing of the roadwork complicates matters even further, Rosas said. He said it couldn't be any worse for them.

"July and August are our busiest months and we haven't seen a soul all day," he said.

Rosas said his business is losing between $400 and $800 a day. He said he fears the worst if the barrels don't disappear soon.

"If things don't get better I'm thinking about shutting it down for a month or two," Rosas said.

He said he contacted the city trying to find out if he can get help for his struggling business. But he claims he hasn't gotten anywhere.

Meanwhile, Rosas wants people to know, despite the construction, his shop is ready to help with their auto repair needs.

"We're open. We appreciate all the business. And like I said we really don't want to close because we do have same loyal customers, but at this point I'm confused now," Rosas said.

The city said the long term benefit of the construction outweighs the negative short term impact on a business.

They expect the project to be complete by Aug. 22.
