Man wanted for White Street homicide

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Less than two weeks ago, a 27-year-old Springfield man was shot and killed on White Street. Police now have their eyes on a suspect who they are convinced is still here in western Massachusetts.

Police are looking for 20-year-old Travis A. Perkins, who they are convinced is responsible for the city's seventh homicide this year.

Just after 9 p.m. on July 19, 2014, Springfield police swarmed the area of 163 White Street for a gang-related shooting.

When police arrived, the victim, Jermaine Cowell, 27, lay suffering on the ground from several gunshot wounds to the chest.

"At that time the homicide unit kicked into gear," Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney said. "They came up here and this area all around here was where a murder investigation took place."

A memorial still lingers at the scene. Cowell was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Thanks to the cooperation of witnesses, police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Perkins, who is wanted for murder.

"He's a known gang member in Springfield," Delaney said. "He had a lot of interaction with the Springfield Police Department, even though he's still young at 20 years old."

If you know the whereabouts of Perkins, call the Springfield Police Department's Detective Bureau at (413) 787-6355 or dial 911.
