24 undocumented children coming to Bay City

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Bay City continued to buzz Friday after Thursday's announcement that a handful of undocumented children will be housed there later this month.

Suddenly and without warning the city announced 24 children will be coming to Mid-Michigan in the coming weeks.

"We're just looking into both sides of it," deputy city manager Dana Muscott said.

There are 24 undocumented children from Central America on their way to Bay City. They'll stay at Wellspring Lutheran Services.

"I really don't think there's something the city can do about them coming in, but we're just making sure that everything is fine with Lutheran Services having them there," Muscott said.

Muscott is trying to ease some residents concerns that these kids will be a financial burden for the city.

"There's no impact on the city. All funds that are being given to Lutheran Services is directly from the federal government," Muscott said.

Regardless of what side of the fence people are on, Muscott is asking them all for a little patience.

"I think the citizens of Bay City need to just take a breath and lets see what it brings," she said.

Vassar was the Mid-Michigan town that was first rumored to house some of those undocumented children. It's unknown if the decision to place some of them in Bay City will have an impact on the situation in Vassar.
