Road construction project to begin on Saginaw County's Miller Road

THOMAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

The orange barrels will be popping up on a heavily traveled Mid-Michigan road, and it has some people upset.

They're not upset about the disruption that comes with construction, but about what the end result may bring the community.

The construction will widen parts of North Miller Road from two lanes to three lanes.

We're not happy about it at all as are a majority of the people on the road

It's a Saginaw County Road Commission project that almost didn't happen because of a lack of funding, but when the state kicked in more than $1 million the project got the green light.

Right now stakes are already laid out.

"A very vital project to this area and we're very happy to receive the additional funding," said Joe Wisniewski, director of engineering for the Saginaw County Road Commission.

During Phase 1, crews will close down Miller from Geddes to State, adding a curb and gutter.

Then starting next summer, crews will begin Phase 2, where they will add a turn lane on Miller from Geddes to Gratiot.

Some residents who have previously signed petitions against the project said it will increase traffic flow and make the road more dangerous.

"We do realize that it gets a lot of traffic, but it's a residential road. There are kids that have to get to the school bus.  We have two boys that cross this road to go over to the library and the courts," said Dawn Haufe, Thomas Township resident.

Wisniewski said the project has support from the township and businesses. He hopes residents benefit from the road work once it's finished.

"There will be safety improvements, drainage improvements, and also the capacity with keeping traffic moving, and it be easier for them to pull out of their driveways," Wisniewski said.

The road commission said construction should begin in the next couple of weeks.
