Bay City businesses look forward to Uptown completion

The new Dow Corning offices opened Monday and that has local restaurants very happy.

Hundreds of new Dow Corning employees have to eat somewhere and downtown restaurants are banking on it.

Bobbie Blas is pretty happy. She's excited to see the first of what she hopes will be many days of added business. She's the manager at American Kitchen in Bay City.

The eatery is looking to cash in thanks to more than 300 new Dow Corning employees. Monday was their first day at work at the facility in the Uptown at RiversEdge project. Blas wants her establishment to be their mid-day break destination.

"Come in quick, get lunch and go back and who knows they might come back for happy hour or for dinner," Blas said.

She said there's plenty of menu items to choose from.

"The American beef burger. We also have vegetarian black bean burgers too. Then we also have grilled cheese sandwiches, dinner plates. We have something for everyone," Blas said.

American Kitchen isn't the only place that stands to benefit from the influx of the new employees. Residents with the Downtown Development Authority said Dow Corning's presence is good for the entire area.

"Downtown Bay City is known for it's eateries. Almost all one-of-a-kind, unique places. And you know we know we have something special and we feel that this is just perfect for Dow Corning to have that option," said Candace Bales, executive director of Bay City's Downtown Management Board and Downtown Development Authority.

Bales said it's too early to tell what kind of economic impact Uptown will have. She said the multimillion dollar development will be a positive one for the community.

"It really puts the spotlight on us. It shows that this is a place worth investing in and we're growing. That's just super important for all of us," Bales said.

A new bus route announced last week will take those employees to many of the restaurants in downtown Bay City.
