Construction project finishes early

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

It's an early wrap for a major construction project along a well-known street in Mid-Michigan and it comes as a huge relief for business owners and residents.

It's been a long summer for business owners in Old Town along Hamilton Street and an especially tough one for Belinda's Beauty Parlor.

"I've lost a lot of business," Belinda Neitzel said.

Hopefully for Neitzel the dry spell is over. Tuesday the stretch of Hamilton Street between Court Street and Lyon is officially open to traffic, but during construction Neitzel said her business dropped significantly.

"We really took a hit," she said.

At the other end of orange barrels and down the road Paul Barara decided to make some upgrades inside Jake's Old City Grill. This is the first full week Jake's is reopened for business.

The upgrades to Old Town are a part of a million dollar project that includes new streets, extending the sidewalks to allow for outdoor seating at places like Jake's and a new water main. It began at the end of April and wasn't expected to be completed until the end of August.

In the meantime Belinda's Beauty Parlor is offering a special promotion to try and get customers back in the doors.
