Residents upset over construction project

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

River Road has been crumbling into the Tittabawassee River for months with no repairs made. That has some people upset that a million dollars is being spent to widen a stretch of North Miller Road and nothing is being done to repair River Road.

"It just seems like they're not doing anything over there," Diane Burba said.

The street is crumbling and motorists only have access to one lane. The road started falling apart during the spring floods of 2013.

"They need to get over here and get some of this done before winter. Because if that caves in any more, there's going to be no road there," Burba said.

Burba said she's upset and frustrated to see construction taking place a stone's throw away at Miller Road. She wants to know why more isn't being done near her home.

"Split your time. Do some over there and some over here. Don't concentrate in one area," she said.

TV5 took Burba's concerns to the Saginaw County Road Commission.

"We are currently working with emergency response funds through the state of Michigan to assist with funding and as soon as we have engineering plans and funding sources lined up we'll have a project out here to correct the issue," said Joe Wisniewski, director of engineering with the road commission.

He said it would cost about $500,000 to fix River Road.

"We can't really move the funds from miller road," Wisniewski said.

He said the funding would be lost if it isn't used for its intended purpose.

Meanwhile, Burba said she understands that, but that's not good enough. She said the road is on borrowed time and will continue to get worse.

"I don't know where the funding is going to come from but they need to get on it," Burba said.
