Motorist returns to work after mob attack

Posted: Updated:

A Detroit-area motorist is returning to work as a tree trimmer four months after being severely beaten in a mob attack.

Steve Utash says in a letter he is thankful to thousands of people who donated money to his recovery. His daughter posted the letter to the website that helped raise nearly $190,000 in donations for his medical expenses.

Fifty-four-year-old Utash was attacked in April when he accidentally hit a 10-year-old boy with his pickup truck in Detroit.

Utash was put in a medically induced coma. The boy's injuries weren't serious.

Five people pleaded guilty to assault and were sentenced. Attempted murder charges were dropped.

The longest prison sentence among them was nearly 6 1/2 years for a man whose punishment was enhanced because of his criminal record.
