Midland neighborhood received makeover

Posted: Updated:
MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Residents in Midland heard the sound of a neighborhood reviving on Thursday as volunteers took out their tools to help out their neighbors.

Hammer and tool belts ready, the volunteers changed the face of a neighborhood.

"Anything from replacing windows, to building ramps, painting, scraping, some of these things homeowners are not able to do themselves," said Jennifer Chappel, executive director for Habitat for Humanity in Midland.

Throughout the week, more than 650 volunteers are working with Habitat for Humanity to do service projects in Midland. It's called the Neighborhood Rehabilitation Initiative.

From cutting wood for porches, or painting shingles, some homeowners are getting a makeover they may not be able to afford themselves.

"They love the fact that people are volunteering their time to support them. A lot of time our homeowners are out there side by side our volunteers and they feel truly, truly blessed," Chappel said.

This year the concentration is 25 homes in the neighborhoods around Carpenter Road.

In the past five years over 125 homes have been fixed up due to this initiative.

Many of the volunteers are workers from Dow and Consumers Energy.

"You look around and see all these people and you know they are your customers. You don't know them personally, but being able to pin point a few people and drive by a home, you can say 'hey, I had a little impact on that person's life,'" said Jason Mueller, volunteer.

Many of the volunteers said they believe they are enjoying giving back as much as the homeowners are getting in return.

"Hopefully we have a really impacting influence of these homes," Mueller said.

Neighborhoods were assessed in the spring to determine this year's project area. All the materials are provided by local donors.
