Michigan mailman helps rescue pit bulls from fire

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI (AP) -

Two pit bulls have escaped a Detroit-area house fire unharmed thanks to the help of a rookie letter carrier.

The Detroit Free Press reports Brandon Messerschmidt saw flames coming from a garage on his route Thursday. The U.S. Postal Service worker of three months says owner Mark Ruggles was using a hose to extinguish the fire.

Messerchmidt says he went in the house to rescue the barking dogs but Ruggles had gotten them out by the time Messerchmidt was inside.

He says he took care of the pit bulls, Roscoe and Diesel, while Ruggles turned his attention to the fire. He says he was slightly afraid of the dogs because he'd been trained to avoid them.

Ruggle's wife says the house is mostly intact except for the charred garage.
